Alberta boasts one of the strongest economies in the world. Despite this, the province suffers from a significant labor shortage, which, which is regarded as the greatest limiter to its regional growth potential. By 2025, 350,000 positions are expected to be vacant (Conference Board of Canada).
The Ventoro Institute will work with both public and private sector leaders across Alberta to find potential near and long term solutions to this growing labor problem.
The Albertan economy is supported by a burgeoning petroleum industry and, to a lesser extent, agriculture and technology. The GDP per capita in 2006 was the highest of any province in Canada at C$69,789 (USD $61,500). This is higher than all US states, 56% above the national average and more than twice that of some of the Atlantic provinces. If it were its own country, it would be ranked second richest in the world (after Luxembourg). The average Albertan salary is more than $7,000 US higher than the American average.
Growth can be sustained only if there is a reliable labor market to fill the positions across all sectors.
The Ventoro Institute is looking at developing the Alberta labor markets and working with global labor sources to fulfill the needs of this rapidly growing and wealthy province.
